Catnip (Nepeta cataria)

Catnip contains a compound called nepetalactone, which is highly effective at repelling cockroaches. Studies have shown that it’s even more effective than DEET in some cases.

• How to use – Plant catnip in pots near windows and doorways, or place sachets of dried catnip in cabinets and under sinks.

Bay Laurel (Bay Leaf Plant)

Bay leaves have a strong, pungent scent that roaches dislike. While it won’t kill them, it can discourage them from nesting in certain areas.

• How to use – Crush fresh or dried bay leaves and place them in food storage areas, pantries, and drawers.

Mint (Peppermint or Spearmint)

Mint plants give off a strong aroma that overwhelms a roach’s senses. The essential oil derived from mint is also a common roach repellent.

• How to use – Grow mint in pots and place them in kitchens, bathrooms, or near entry points. You can also use peppermint oil spray for added effect.

Lavender

Though loved by humans for its calming scent, lavender is known to repel various insects including roaches.

• How to use – Use potted lavender plants indoors or outdoors, or keep sachets of dried lavender in drawers and closets.

Chrysanthemums

Chrysanthemums contain pyrethrins, a natural insect repellent used in many pest control products.

• How to use – Keep potted chrysanthemums in the home during blooming season, or grow them in your garden near entryways.

Catnip, bay leaf, mint, lavender, & chrysanthemums all contain natural compounds that roaches avoid. While not a complete solution on their own, these plants can be part of an effective, natural pest control strategy for your home.
