Scents Roaches Hate the Most

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint is one of the most well-known natural roach repellents. The strong menthol scent overwhelms a cockroach’s senses and can help deter them from treated areas.

• How to Use – Mix 10 – 15 drops of peppermint essential oil with water in a spray bottle and spritz around entry points, baseboards, & cabinets.

Lavender

Roaches hate the smell of lavender, even though it’s pleasant to humans. It can act as a natural barrier when used consistently.

• How to Use – Place lavender oil-soaked cotton balls in cabinets and under sinks, or use lavender sachets in drawers.

Citrus (Especially Lemon)

The smell of lemon and other citrus oils can repel cockroaches. Many natural cleaning products use citrus for this reason.

• How to Use – Add lemon juice or citrus oil to your cleaning routine. Wipe down counters and floors with a lemon-water solution.

Eucalyptus

Like peppermint, eucalyptus oil has a strong aroma that cockroaches dislike.

• How to Use – Mix with water in a spray bottle, or add drops to cotton balls and leave them in corners where roaches may hide.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is known for its strong scent and antimicrobial properties. It also works as a natural roach deterrent.

• How to Use – Combine 10 drops of tea tree oil with water and vinegar for a multipurpose repellent spray.

Bay Leaves

Bay leaves release a smell that roaches find unappealing. While not as potent as oils, they are an easy and mess-free option.

• How to Use – Place whole bay leaves in pantry shelves, under the fridge, and in cabinets.

These smells won’t kill roaches, but they can discourage them from nesting or traveling in treated areas.
